The Government’s 25 year Environment Plan sets out an aspiration to mainstream biodiversity net gain in the planning system and move towards approaches the integrate natural capital benefits.
The Government defines Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach to development, and/or land management, that aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was beforehand. The word ‘biodiversity’ comes from the term ‘biological diversity’
Sustainable development sits atop the political agenda for the farm and rural sector in terms of new developments, which in turn ensures that improving biodiversity is a key driver for developers, land owners and local planning authorities across the UK.
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach used to improve the biodiversity value of a development. Once applied, on completion, a site will have be sure to have a positive ecological impact, delivering improvements through habitat creation or enhancement after avoiding or mitigating harm.
The areas of biodiversity can be created within the new development or off set to land away from the build site to create new woodland, ponds and areas where all species of flora, fauna, insects and animals can thrive.
The concept of ‘Biodiversity Offsetting’ seeks to minimise the environmental impacts of a development project by ensuring that any environmental damage caused by the development process in one place is compensated for somewhere else – through a system of biodiversity credits and ‘habitat banking’.
Requirements are specified under the Biodiversity Metric 3, providing a British standard for all new development projects.
