With the average age of the UK farmer at 59, succession planning should be at the forefront of the discussion around the kitchen table, but in reality it’s a subject shrouded in taboo.

Succession planning is an essential part of running any family business, but in an industry of patriarchal tradition, the soft skills are not always at the top of the agenda. Effectively planning for the future allows farmers to protect their assets, safeguard the long-term finances of the business and ensure continuity not only to the supply chain but also for the future generations of the family. Perhaps of primary importance, succession planning allows for financial support to those reliant upon the business for their livelihood.

Start early

Appropriate succession planning does not have to be about retirement. It should be undertaken earlier than this to put in place a long-term strategic plan for the business including goals, visions, plans and a road map to plot what success looks like.
