Straw in the Swath sale 10th July 2023

This year Howkins & Harrison saw entry of nearly 1900 acres of straw offered for sale at Lutterworth Rugby Football Club, Bitteswell for our annual Straw in the Swath sale. This year we started earlier than usual; however, many were not deterred with plenty of familiar faces and some new faces came to purchase produce. With entries from previous vendors together with pictures in the catalogue and the ability to view the crop prior to the sale, prospective purchasers could rest assured and bid with confidence as to the quality of the produce on offer.

Despite inflation continuing to climb and rising service costs, purchasers showed there is still the demand for straw as the prices on average were higher than last year.

The demand for winter wheat straw was reliable with a top price fetching £55 to the acre. The inclusion of Rye Straw again this year saw it reach a price of £38 to the acre with winter barley achieving a top figure of £60 to the acre. The one lot of Spring Barley fetched £24 to the acre, while the Winter Oats made £38 to the acre.
