Straw in the Swath sale 7th July 2022

An entry of approximately 1900 acres of straw, standing crop and bales was offered for sale at Lutterworth Rugby Football Club, Bitteswell for the annual Howkins & Harrison Straw in the Swath sale. With pictures in the catalogue and viewing prior to the sale, prospective purchasers could bid with confidence as to the quality of the produce on offer.

What we could assume is a result of inflation together with rising service costs, purchasers showed a great deal of caution in their willingness to commit to making purchases.

The demand for winter wheat straw was reliable with a top price of £50 to the acre. The introduction of Rye Straw this year saw a sale price of £34 to the acre with winter barley achieving £46 to the acre.

A new vendor included three lots of a standing Winter Wheat crop in Great Bowden, Market Harborough which sold exceptionally well, even exceeding Stuart’s expectations, reaching £705 to the acre.

220 acres of straw to be baled by the vendor with a Massey Ferguson 187 baler and collected from the field by the purchaser was offered for sale. Every bale was sold at a price of £22.50 for Winter Wheat, Winter Oats, Spring Oats and Winter Barley.
